TMJ disorder treatment

What is Temporomandibular Joints (TMJs)?

Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) are a group of more than 30 conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and muscles that control jaw movement. Where TMD refers to the disorder, TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint that connects your jawbone to your skull.

Some TMDs can result from injuries to the jaw or temporomandibular joint, but most of the time, the precise etiology is unknown. Many people report that there is no clear cause for their symptoms to begin.

If left unchecked, TMD can lead to long-term chronic conditions that typically worsen over time. Some of these include:

  • Grinding of teeth that may cause tooth fracture
  • Jaw trauma
  • Tenderness in the temporomandibular joint
  • Lower overall quality of life

What are some of the causes of TMJ/TMD?

  • Malocclusion – the abnormal positioning of the upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed (bite)
  • Clenching and/or grinding the teeth (usually occurring during sleep) caused by stress
  • Trauma to the jaw area or, specifically, to the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint) itself
  • Arthritis within the jaw joint

What are the most prevalent symptoms of TMJ?

  • Headaches (including migraines) – 76%
  • Ear problems (including tinnitus [ringing in the ears], clogged or “muffled” ears, and dizziness – 76%
  • Pain, clicking and/or popping sounds, limited ability to open temporomandibular joint – 72%
  • Pain in throat (44%), face (45%), teeth (51%), neck (50%), back (41%) and behind eyes (38%)

Can denture wearers develop TMD?

Yes. In fact, ill-fitting dentures frequently cause jaw pain and TMD. When patients wear false teeth that are too loose, they unconsciously try to bring them into alignment, putting constant strain on their TMJs. Additionally, it can take longer for denture wearers to chew up their food, meaning their jaw must move more than those who have natural teeth or dental implants.

Does TMD require surgery?

We’re committed to finding the right non-surgical options that work long-term and optimize your chewing system. More conservative, non-surgical options are engineered to reduce the pressure on the TMJ, alleviate pain, and promote regular activity. Surgery is often the last line of defense and is very rarely needed for TMD.

Can children be diagnosed with TMD?

While TMD is more common among patients in their 20s to 40s, children can develop TMD. Making sure your child regularly goes to biannual dental exams can ensure TMD is diagnosed properly.

What are your Clinic Timings?
